What is International Holocaust Remembrance Day?
Every year since 2006 on 27 January we celebrate International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is an international memorial day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. It is also a day on which Auschwitz-Birkenau the largest Nazi death camp was liberated by Soviet troops in 1945. This date marks the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 2 million Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The Uited Nations General Assembly designated that in 2005. During its commemoration survivors, their families and various leaders make their voices heard. Many of them speak publicly about the Holocaust or their experiences around the event, its aftermath and why the world should never forget what happened in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s.
Many statements emphasize the need for future generations to learn about and remember the Holocaust and for everyone to work towards preventing genocide. On International Holocaust Remembrance Day people light candles in their windows as a symbol of they remembrance of those who suffered.and died due to Holocaust.
